Mike McAvoy
Mike McAvoy was appointed CEO of Onion, Inc. in June 2015 after serving as President since 2013.
As CEO, McAvoy is responsible for the strategy and day-to-day operation of The Onion, its sister publication, The A.V. Club, and internet parody site, ClickHole. Among other responsibilities, he has direct oversight of the company’s advertising, product development, technology and finance departments.
McAvoy spearheaded the creation of The Onion’s in-house creative services
department, Onion Labs. Bringing together the best comedy writers and marketing talent to create advertising content worthy of the Onion name, Onion Labs has already produced native advertising programs and executed various creative projects for brands like 7-Eleven, Adobe, Clorox, Home Depot, Microsoft, Lenovo, and YouTube.
McAvoy joined The Onion in 2005 as Controller, later becoming Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. Before joining America’s Finest News Source, McAvoy worked in banking and online education
A Wisconsin native, he is a graduate of St. Thomas University in Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts in Finance, Accounting and Spanish.
McAvoy and his wife, Lindsay, have made their home in Chicago since 2007, and our parents to identical twin boys, Aiden and Owen.
